It is no secret that Western society has been suffering from an alarmingly increasing rate of disconnection in recent years. A 2021 Gallop study yielded that 57% of men in the U.S. feel lonely, with only 27% of men claiming they had at least 6 close friends; down from 55% from the same study taken in 1990. And young men are faring worse than most; 28% of men under 30 reported having no close social connections. An Australian government study yielded similar results, reporting 25% of Aussie men will suffer from mental health issues in their lifetime, predominantly depression, with 40% of men experiencing severe depression were still experiencing it 2 years later. The truth is, the studies are difficult to read, and they are statistically likely to be personally relatable to all of us, with either ourselves or someone known to us having been one of these statistics. In my own experience of 10,000+ hours coaching 1000s of men, I’ve found disconnection is best tackled from 3 angles - disconnection from self, from purpose, and from tribe. And the good news is, those who do resolve these factors tend emerge as great leaders, both personally and professionally.
